Cristo de las Piedrecitas

A devotional sculpture featuring the face of Christ integrated into a complex ornamental structure, somewhere between a reliquary and an altar. Small stones of different colors are arranged on either side, each marked with a secret name, as if they were part of an ancient ritual devoted to Jesus whose meaning had been lost over time. The composition combines geometric elements, symbols, and aged metallic textures, creating the impression of an object belonging to an unknown religious tradition.

Sculpture modeled in clay, carved plaster, and repurposed objects. Casted in resin with new details by assembling repurposed objects and epoxy putty. Painted with shellac, chalk paint, acrylics, and varnish.

This ability to create from what already exists is what J.R.R. Tolkien called subcreation, a lesser act of imitation of the Creator. However, for Tomás Barceló, shaping the figure of Christ is not merely an artistic exercise but a daunting challenge, as it touches the very core of his faith. To represent Jesus is to approach an unfathomable mystery, a task that confronts him with the deepest aspects of both his belief and his art.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Tomás Barceló

Tomás Barceló, a Mallorcan sculptor and disciple of the master J.S. Jassans at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona, blends his passion for archaic sculpture with assemblage and polychromy.

Throughout his life, his boundless curiosity has led him to roles as a teacher, lifeguard, mariachi, bagpiper, film sculptor, and gallery artist, among others. His work is the culmination of his love for form and color, inspired by ancient art in his youth, fantasy and science fiction in his teenage years, and building toys from his childhood.

With each piece, Barceló seeks to restore sculpture to its place as a popular art, accessible and present in every home once again.
