A face of profound melancholy, marked by folds that speak of weariness and compassion. The sunken gaze, faintly lit with soft pink tones, seems to contemplate an old and quiet sorrow. Every groove in the hair and beard adds to the sense of a timeless icon, recovered from a silent devotion.

Sculpture modeled in fine grog refractory clay and reproduced in resin. Painted with shellac, chalk paint, acrylics, ferric paint, and varnish.

"The Word was made flesh" is a truth that deeply resonates with Tomás' work, who must transform an idea into matter, giving form to the invisible. This ability to create from what already exists is what J.R.R. Tolkien called subcreation, a lesser act of imitation of the Creator. However, for Tomás Barceló, shaping the figure of Christ is not merely an artistic exercise but a daunting challenge, as it touches the very core of his faith. To represent Jesus is to approach an unfathomable mystery, a task that confronts him with the deepest aspects of both his belief and his art.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Tomás Barceló

Tomás Barceló, a Mallorcan sculptor and disciple of the master J.S. Jassans at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona, blends his passion for archaic sculpture with assemblage and polychromy.

Throughout his life, his boundless curiosity has led him to roles as a teacher, lifeguard, mariachi, bagpiper, film sculptor, and gallery artist, among others. His work is the culmination of his love for form and color, inspired by ancient art in his youth, fantasy and science fiction in his teenage years, and building toys from his childhood.

With each piece, Barceló seeks to restore sculpture to its place as a popular art, accessible and present in every home once again.
